“Fast Downloads” was released in version 4648. This involved a few improvements:
- Increased the number of concurrent downloads
- Added a distinction between small and large downloads, then allowed more concurrent small file downloads.
- Download the map data just for the current time first, then the complete tile data.
Number 3 leads to the map view being painted very fast but as soon as you start swiping, you’ll see that it’s a facade and the tile data for the remaining data is still downloading.
There is a checkbox in Advanced Settings that allow you to turn this on/off. Note, this toggles all improvements 1, 2 and 3.
Questions: What do you think about about #3 - the current time facade?
I like to keep the Settings minimal and clean, and would like to remove the “Fast Downloads” setting.
