UKMO forecast duration variability

The UKMO forecast duration often reduces from 6 days to 3 days after a refresh. ie. 2 days of forecast data that was there yesterday has gone. It then returns to 6 days at some point after another refresh.

Is this an issue with the data source or the app (4.614 Android)?

It seems to happen every morning. The previous evening’s forecast is truncated from 6 to 3 days. The next forecast is due around 7:19am, after which it updates to a forecast run at 0000UTC with 6 days.

“UKMO’s 10 km global deterministic forecast is run four times a day at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00, and 18:00 UTC. The 00Z and 12Z cycles extend out to 168 hours, while the 06Z and 18Z cycles typically extend to about 67 hours”.

Thanks, that is good to know. Do other models do the same?

From a user perspective, I think it would be best if the 67hr forecasts updated or overwrote the near term, but the previous forecast was still retained for the subsequent days. I’m guessing that is how UKMO intend them to be used?
